The gadget is called the Addonics NAS adapter, where NAS comes for Network Attached Storage. Apart from just adding storage device to network, Addonics NAS adapter can do a lot more. But for wide compatibility with modern operating systems (Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, Solaris) and both SMB (Server Message Block) and Samba protocols, the Addonics adapter is capable of turning your external HDD into a RAID (Redundant Array of Inexpensive / Independent Disks). It will require some more gadgets like I / O converters and port multipliers, but anyway it is possible. NAS adapter can also provides up to eight users with FTP access to the Internet at the same time, and access to Ethernet with speed up to 100 Mbps. This is totally like having optical fiber connection. One more humble feature is ability to charge USB gadgets. All that for 55 USD. Not much at all, but I think it would be a bargain only if you are going to use all of its features to the max
